Update on Mum
Jan. 2nd, 2015 08:06 pmI finally managed to get a flight and I'm at the airport waiting to board. About 40 minutes ago we got the results of the various X-rays and CT scans. Thankfully her ribs are not broken but she does have a fractured sternum from the seatbelt. She had a very old car so there were no airbags. Apparently she has quite substantial bruising which is only going to worsen over the next three to four days.
She's resting relatively comfortably even though the hospital staff are being dicks about pain relief. She's allergic to codeine and oxycodone makes her violently ill so all they are giving her is acetaminophen which just isn't good enough. I would imagine there must be some other options but they are not giving her any.
Thank you for all of your messages. I'll check in when I can. Boarding has been called so I've gotta go.

Date: 2015-01-02 09:47 am (UTC)There are other options for the pain, I hope she gets what she needs soon. But I think what she needs the most right now, is you.
Best wishes for both of you.

Date: 2015-01-02 10:00 am (UTC)Fractured sternum, ouch! But it could have been so much worse, so although I'm sad she had the accident, I'm glad she escaped without apocalyptic injuries.
In the hospital staff's defense, they're not being dicks so much as just not having many options, as (a), at this point, they probablly don't want to give her narcotics because they're worried about respiratory issues, and (b) so many of the "good" painkillers are either in the codeine or oxycodone family, whch your Mum cannot take. *mom was a nurse*
Have a safe flight, lady, and know that my thoughts are with you and your Mum. ♥

Date: 2015-01-02 06:59 pm (UTC)I sympathise completely with the painkiller problem; I'm allergic to both ibuprofen based painkillers and anything that contains codeine. There are effective alternatives though and I'm shocked that the hospital haven't prescribed something more effective.
Good wishes to your mum for a full and speedy recovery and to you because there's nothing worse than that feeling when the ones you love are hurting.

Date: 2015-01-02 10:48 pm (UTC)Pain relief is tricky with lung stuff. She's gonna be uncomfortable but I can imagine they don't want to risk her lung function deteriorating.
Know that we're all thinking of you and sending get wells to you mom! ♥ xxx
