Chapter Ten - Breathe Underwater
“Oh Jesus, what have you done?”
Jensen rushed forward cradling Jared’s head in his lap.
“Ty, get the phone.”
Nicki paled as she took in the sight of an unconscious Jared and the sheer look of terror on Jensen’s face.
“What’s wrong with him? Is he sick?”
Jensen completely ignored her as he snatched the phone out of Ty’s hand and hit the number programmed into the speed dial.
“Traci, thank God, it’s Jensen. Something happened. Jared’s collapsed at the house and I don’t know what to do. Can you come?”
When she said she was on her way Jensen almost cried with relief. He ended the call and dropped the phone to the floor, smoothing back Jared’s hair, muttering that everything would be okay even though he wasn’t sure that was true. Ty had gone into Jared’s bathroom to wet down a washcloth.
“What can I do?” whispered Nicki.
“I think you’ve done more than enough,” he spat at her making her breath hitch in a sob.
He looked up at her anguished face and said, “You can call down to the gate and tell them to let Dr Dinwiddie through as soon as she gets here.”
“Doctor? Oh my God. I’m sorry Jense, I had no idea he was sick. I’m so sorry.” She ran off to make the call.
When she returned a few moments later she apologized again and said she would leave.
“No! You need to answer some questions but I need to deal with Jared right now.”
“O...Okay, I’ll go wait. Is he going to be okay? Why hasn’t he woken up? He didn’t bang his head that hard did he?”
“I don’t know.”
Jensen went back to muttering to Jared while Ty went to wait by the door for Traci’s arrival and Nicki went out to the terrace to smoke and wait.
Jared had come around a few minutes later, looking disoriented and then panicked. Jensen tried to prop him up against his chest to coach his breathing like he’d had to do so many times in the first few weeks after the attack but Jared didn’t even recognize him and was huddled into a ball whispering, “No...no...no, please don’t hurt me anymore,” over and over so Jensen backed off, wanting nothing more than to provide comfort and reassurance but terrified he would do more harm than good.
When Traci had finally rushed through the door with her medical bag fifteen minutes later, she checked Jared’s pupils and the small cut on his head and pronounced his physical injury to be minor; however, his mental state was a mess. His breathing was erratic and he was clutching at his chest in the throes of a pretty major panic attack. Traci administered a strong sedative and Jensen and Ty lifted the extremely heavy dead weight to the bed. When the medication knocked him out completely, Jensen quietly explained what had happened to Traci whose angry expression could have stripped paint.
While Traci tended to Jared, Jensen walked out to the terrace looking exhausted and frightened.
“What the fuck Nicki, seriously, what the FUCK?”
She immediately burst into tears; real ones. Jensen had learned during his divorce when her tears were real or faked to influence a situation.
“I’m sorry okay. I had no idea he was sick. I was hurt and you rejected me and I was angry. It was that damn letter okay. I thought you were fucking Jared and I was angry.”
Jensen swiped his hand across his face as Nicki lit yet another cigarette with a shaking hand.
“Well we aren’t but even if we were, it would be none of your damn business Nick, we’re divorced. Who I sleep with is none of your fucking business!" He sat down heavily, and pressed the heels of his hands into his eyes. "What’s this letter you’ve been shrieking about?”
“I got an anonymous letter a while ago. It said that you and Jared were screwing around; that everyone knew you and Jared were flaming queers.” She put her hands up in a defensive gesture at the explosive look on Jensen’s face. “Their words, not mine. They said you’d both been making a fool out of me while we were married. I didn’t think much about it at the time because you’ve always been out about being bi and Jared was marrying that Lauren girl but then they broke up and there’s been all sorts of stuff about possible affairs and when I found out he was living here I just...I thought it was true.”
“Probably some trouble making gossip mag trying to stir shit up after Jared’s break-up. They’d have enough connections to get your home address easily enough. What else did it say?”
“It didn’t come to the house Jense, it was slid under the door of the gallery. I found it when I opened up one morning. It had some stuff about Jared’s movie and I mean he was just acting right? That’s why I didn’t really take that much notice of it until, well until today when I found out he was living here and I thought maybe it was all true. The rest was just stuff about you two flaunting it and it said something about how much Jared likes to suck cock and how he likes it real rough, just shit like that.”
All the blood suddenly drained from Jensen’s face and he felt light-headed.
“Jense, are you alright? You don’t look so good.”
His throat felt like it was closing up and when he spoke his voice was hoarse, “Oh fuck, oh God. Nicki, do you still have the letter?”
“Jesus, baby, what’s wrong?”
“Do you?!” he shouted.
“Um, yeah probably. I don’t think I threw it away, I think I threw it into a drawer at the gallery. Why? You’re scaring me, what’s the matter?”
“Do you think you could get it for me?”
“Sure, I guess so. Are you going to tell me what this is all about? It was obviously just a bad prank and I’m really sorry that I said those things to Jared while he’s not well. I didn’t know he was sick. It’s not something serious is it?”
Jensen didn’t answer her but called out for Ty instead. When he stepped out Jensen asked if he could drive Nicki to her gallery.
“You want me to get it now?” She asked looking perplexed.
“Yeah, it’s really important Nick. Ty, there’s a letter Nicki has to collect for me and I need to make sure it doesn’t get any more fingerprints on it. Can you bag it up and bring it back here?”
“Yeah, no problem.” Ty nodded to Nicki.
“Jensen, what the hell is going on and who is this guy?”
“Ty is Jared’s bodyguard. Someone has already hurt Jared and I think the letter may be a threat or a taunt. I need to see it. I’ll explain as much as I can later but I really need you to do this, it’s important.”
Looking completely shell-shocked she nodded her head and went with Ty.
While Nicki and Ty were gone and Jared was sleeping, Jensen filled Traci in completely with what had taken place and the revelation about the letter. Both of them knew that the existence of the letter and what it means was possibly going to change everything for Jared and they needed to make sure he felt as supported and safe as they could make him but this time it might not be enough.
“You know if the letter says what we think it’s going to then we can be pretty certain who it’s from.”
“Yeah, I know.”
“Jensen, if there is one letter out there, there may be more.”
That was something that hadn’t crossed his mind and it hurt like a physical blow. God, what if there were more?
“Surely someone would’ve said something to us by now if there was.”
“Your ex didn’t mention it before now," she shrugged. "She just blew it off like it was some sort of nasty gossip and others may have too but we have to at least consider that if there are things like things being sent to friends and family they could escalate and send it to someone who might actually want to do something with whatever the contents are, like the media.”
“Fuck!”
“Yeah, fuck. We also have to consider that if they’ve sent something like this they want to mess with Jared – and you – even more. The police should really be involved no matter how much Jared wants to keep a lid on things. Those animals may still pose a further threat to him, to you and to Jake. Let’s just see what it says before we jump to any conclusions but if it is what we think then we need to prepare Jared and we need to push a little for police involvement. Normally I’d never consider trying to force the hand of one of my patients but keeping him safe is more important than keeping it quiet. I highly doubt he’ll see it that way though. This is most likely going to cause a major setback for him and he has been doing so damn well lately. Is it wrong for me as a doctor to say I wish someone would put these guys down like the rabid dogs they are?”
“No more wrong than me wanting to be the one to fire the bullets.”
They bumped shoulders together and Traci leaned her head on Jensen’s shoulder. She always tried to maintain a professional distance from her patients but damn she liked these guys. She had grown incredibly attached to Jared and Jensen had become a really good friend over the past few months. Once again she found herself thinking how unfair it all was that they were going through this but she knew better than most that bad things happen to good people all the time.
“He’s going to need additional help with this. His once a week and occasional ad-hoc sessions probably aren’t going to cut it for the next little while,” she sighed.
“I’ll do whatever it takes, Traci. I know this is a lot to ask because I know you have a lot of other patients but is there any way we can have you devote more time to Jared? I’ll pay for anything and everything you need to make it possible, sort of like having you on retainer, is that something you could do?”
She looked at him thoughtfully and nodded. “I can hand off some of my patients to another psychiatrist, the same way we do if one of us goes on vacation; at least for the next few weeks. There are a few I can’t do that with because they are still at a point where it would be detrimental to their recovery but it will reduce my patient load significantly. I won’t take on anyone new for the moment either. I’ll make myself available to Jared whenever I can for a little while, even if it means hauling this sweet, firm ass of mine out of bed in the middle of the night,” she said, slapping her own backside, making Jensen smile. He still couldn’t believe how lucky they were to find Traci, he absolutely adores her and Jared trusts her implicitly.
“Well it is a pretty sweet ass,” he grinned and then said more seriously, “Thanks Traci, I know this is not something you would normally do.”
“No it’s not,” she agreed, “but this is not a normal situation either.”
When Ty and Nicki returned, Ty handed the letter, confined in a plastic bag, to Jensen and all four of them sat down to read it.
The first half of the letter was exactly what Nicki had described, insinuating that Jared and Jensen were screwing around while she and Jensen were still married and using homophobic language to describe them. The second part made Jensen want to smash things or hit someone because it was extremely obvious that the letter had been sent by one of Jared’s rapists.
Does Jensen like it rough like Jared? How much Jared likes to be fucked rough, how hard he gets when his mouth is stuffed full of cock, how he likes to be taken by multiple guys at once.
Seeing Jensen’s anguished face as he read it, Nicki suddenly blurted out, “Jesus Christ! This isn’t someone just trying to cause mischief or describing Jared’s sexual kinks is it? A bodyguard, a doctor...he was raped wasn’t he? And the sick fuck that did it sent this to me?”
When Jensen didn’t answer, just lowered his head, she almost wailed, “Oh God and the things I said to him! I’m going to be sick.” She got up and fled the room, her feet pounding down the hall to the nearest bathroom.
Traci got up to follow, “I’ve got this.”
Jensen sat with his elbows on his knees and covered his face with his hands. It was Ty who spoke first.
“I thought it might have been something like that. He doesn’t want anyone to know does he?”
Jensen looked up with tear-filled eyes. “No, and now I’ve betrayed his confidence.”
“No you didn’t. The letter did that and that was out of your hands. If you don’t mind me saying your ex is some piece of work but, by the way she just reacted, it looks like you can trust her at least to keep things quiet.”
“Oh she’s a piece of work alright, you have no idea but yeah, except for the fact that she cheated on me, she can be trusted. I’m not sure it’s going to be able to be kept quiet now anyway. Traci thinks if there’s one letter there might be more.”
“Sounds like a reasonable assumption. My brother-in-law is a detective in the Major Crime Squad. If you guys need to talk to him I can arrange something on the down-low if you like, you know, until Jared decides if he wants to formally report it. He’s a good guy; solid.”
“Thanks, Ty. I don’t even know how I’m going to tell Jared about this yet,” he said gesturing to the plastic covered letter, “but that’s good to know.”
“I’m going to go down to the gate and speak with the guard there. I’ll just let them know some threats have been made and to be extra vigilant. I doubt the pissant that did this would have the balls to try anything but let’s cover all bases. Does Jared know the man who attacked him?”
“Men, plural and no.”
Ty paled and cursed under his breath. “Let me know when you’re ready and we’ll discuss security arrangements and see what else needs to be done. We can change my contract and move me in here twenty-four-seven for a while if need be, it’s what I do best, just let me know.
As he exited the room Nicki returned looking pale and shaken and told him Traci had gone to check on Jared. She threw her arms around Jensen and began to cry, “I’m so fucking sorry, Jensen. I’ll do anything I can to help you; and Jared, if he ever forgives me. I know I’m a selfish bitch and I lash out when I’m angry but you’ve gotta believe me, I didn’t mean to hurt him like that. I would never hurt anyone like that, you know that right? I didn’t know, I didn’t know.”
And he did know that so he wrapped his arms around her and kissed the top of her head. She could be spiteful as hell when she was angry but she wasn’t that cruel.
“We’ll set you up in a hotel or something tomorrow until you can get that Sebastian asshole out of your house but why don’t you stay here tonight and get some rest. Take whichever spare room you like upstairs. I’ll call out for some food.”
“I want to apologize to him when he wakes up.”
“Yeah I know, but if he doesn’t want to talk to you it’s his choice okay. He’s going to freak the fuck out when I tell him about the letter and I won’t have him upset more by you or anyone else, do you understand me? His needs come first.”
“Absolutely. I haven’t forgotten how protective you are with the people you love. So are you going to tell me what happened?”
“It’s not mine to tell, Nick. You knowing what you already do is going to kill him. I won’t betray him like that.”
“He’s lucky to have you in his corner, Jense but, baby, do you have anyone in yours? I know I carried on like a spiteful, childish bitch before and I did try to manipulate you and you didn’t deserve it. We loved each other for a long time, Jensen, so if you’ll let me I’d like to be your friend. No games, I promise. I know you have no real reason to trust me after everything I did to you but you can you know.”
“No games?”
“No games, I swear. This is huge and so damn awful, Jense. It...I can’t even imagine. Jared is a good guy. He didn't deserve this. It puts things into perspective, you know? You were always so good to me and I didn’t appreciate it enough and for that I’m really sorry. Let me do something for you now; let me help.”
God he hoped he could believe her, that this was the part of Nicki he had loved so dearly before she became so greedy and selfish because although he was terrified of her hurting Jared, he really could do with a friend to confide in. He looked at her and saw what looked like genuine concern and decided to take a leap of faith.
“Well okay then.”
