As most of you know, I've been in another city looking after my mother after a car accident. I've just returned home after seven weeks to attend a doctor's appointment and to pick up more clothing only to find my front door has been kicked in, the frame smashed to pieces, and plaster all over the floor...and a police attendance card sitting on my kitchen table! Nothing is missing that I can see and I'm waiting for the cops to call me back to tell me what the hell happened. Whatever it was, it happened on the 16th.

I don't appear to have been robbed. My 50 inch flat screen TV, my DVR, iPod, tablet, and valuables are all where they should be so I'm baffled. I can't even imagine. Faaaark, on top of everything else I'm now going to have to see if the building insurance will cover the damage (which I hope it does because I don't have any money to pay for it), and I don't have the time to get everything repaired as I have to be back in Canberra tomorrow night. Mum's house move is looming and I have to pack up her entire house! I can't for the life of me understand why my landlord wasn't informed so they could contact me.

I swear I'm cursed. I thought the Winchesters had bad luck but I think I'd give them a run for their money. I think I'm going to cry now.

UPDATE: Apparently there was a very nasty and disturbing smell in the building, and my neighbours, who know I'm ill and who hadn't seen me or my cat in weeks, thought I'd snuffed it inside my apartment and called the cops. The cops broke the door down expecting to find me decomposing in my bed!! They didn't find the source of the smell that was permeating the halls and think maybe a rat died in the crawlspace under the building. My life is one step away from being the plotline of a D grade comedy movie.

Oh, no!!! That is terrible. Glad nothing was stolen and that you are ok, but what an awful thing to come home to. {{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}

Maybe they got disturbed bashing the door in and ran off???

Re the insurance. You mention a landlord, so I assume you are renting??? If so, surely the landlord's insurance should cover the damaged door and they would arrange repairs.

Sending good thoughts and positive vibes your way. Take care, ok???

I'm actually sitting here half way between being horrified and giggling now. Apparently there was a very disturbing smell in the building for more than a week and my neighbours, who know I have a long-term illness and hadn't seen me in weeks, thought I had died! The cops broke the door down. I feel like I'm in the plot of a bad comedy film.

Yes, it was a horrible thing to come home to, but now at least I know it wasn't an attempted burglary. Thanks so much for your hugs!!

Oh, I'm LOL'ing right now myself.

Good to hear the door damage had a less serious reason but surely the cops could have gotten contact details for you from the landlord?? Did they at least try and resecure the property?

And you have caring neighbours. A tenant in govt housing here in Perth died and wasn't found for over a year, despite neighbours reporting not seeing him and a very bad smell coming from his unit. State housing folk should have done inspections every few months but, because they couldn't contact the tenant to set a date/time, they just skipped them.

Perhaps let the neighbours know when you are going away next time and give them a contact number? I'll be doing that when I go the US in November.

They secured the door but it would probably only take a solid kick to break it open. I'm very peeved that they didn't even attempt to contact the property manager who was aware of my whereabouts.

I was in such a state of panic and worry when I left that it never occurred to me to tell the neighbours I was leaving. I only know them enough to say hi to in passing in the hallway so I'm quite surprised they were worried about me. They only know I'm sick because they've seen me on my bad days when it's really obvious that I'm not healthy. I've seen all of the horror stories of people being dead for months or even years without anyone knowing so it does restore my faith in people that they actually reported it.

Jesus Christ hun! *hugs you so very hard*

Thank god nothing was taken, and that it was in the interest of trying to help but seriously! Why didn't they contact the landlord because he could've contacted you! O_O

I know! I'm gobsmacked that they went the most extreme route first! Bizarre. I hope I don't have to come face to face with the officers who broke the door down. My little 'buzzy friend' was sitting on my bedside table *giggle, snort* How embarrassing, lol!!

I am equal parts horrified and kinda giggling at this. I can't believe they broke your door down! No-one thought to call your landlord? That's so weird. Coz even if you were decomposing in there, you weren't going anywhere! Where was the rush!? I think the police should pay for it because that was wholly unnecessary.

Christ. Well, I hope it gets fixed ASAP and they find out where the smell is coming from : )

Also I sent you an email....wasn't sure if you got it as you're in transit and all.

Hope you're okay, Hunny! ♥ xx

I thought exactly the same thing. If I was dead enough to stink the place up I wasn't about to be going anywhere in search of fresh brains or something. I think the cops should pay for it too. I think they just wanted a chance to play with their battering ram (that sounds naughty).

I just spoke with a guy from upstairs that told me they discovered what the smell was a couple of days ago. The guy across the hall mustn't have known. My next door neighbour was on holidays in Cambodia and his deep freezer broke. Being the middle of summer here all of the meat began rotting - eeew!

I just got your email and will respond after Supernatural. We finally get The Executioner's Song episode tonight. Hoorah!!! I hate being behind and I heard it was great. I have chips, I have vodka and now I have Sam and Dean. My day is about to improve :)

Mwah xx

First of all you're not a whiney whiner who whines! Christ on a pogo stick, you have every reason to vent and share your feelings with us, I can't believe your luck! I'm pleased it wasn't a break in and hopefully insurance will cover the door. I hope your doctor's appt goes well and that you enjoyed the episode - I'm still reeling from it!! Xx

I'm pretty sure the strata company insurance will deal with it. I can't be held responsible for it and my property manager knows I've been out of town so I'm feeling okay about it. I'll call them tomorrow and tell them they'll have to deal with it all as I need to get back to mum. It's a shit that it happened the first time I actually got a chance to come home for a night, but them's the breaks I guess. Hmmm, maybe I have a cursed object. Where are the Winchesters when you need 'em? lol

Oh my gosh. This is horrible and also funny and definitely B grade comedy stuff. Eek. You would think (as others have said) that they would've checked with the landlord before kicking down the door, but like you say, it sounds like they got a bit excited at the prospect of whipping out their battering rams!

But, definitely some extra stress that you really didn't need. :(

Hope you're enjoying Supernatural. I've got it on right now too! :)

I can just picture an over-enthusiastic young constable gleefully ramming the door. At least I now know how difficult it would be for someone to break in. The guy upstairs said it took them ages to batter the door open. They couldn't have broken a window because they all have bars. I'm going to look on the bright side. This will be a story I can whip out at parties for a laugh. It's pretty weird and funny!

Wait what? The POLICE broke your door down and left your house like that? Are they nuts? Surely they now have the responsibility to make good the damage and to leave your house secure????

It was secured but damaged. The deadlock still worked but the smashed the other door handle, lock, and frame where the lock connects. I can close and lock the door with the deadlock but because the frame has chunks of concrete out of it, I don't know how strong the lock is. I honestly don't understand how the deadlock is in one piece unless in my haste to leave I forgot to lock that one. I'd hate to see what they would have done if they had smashed the deadlock as well; just leave the door open? Yeah, I'm stunned they left it the way they did too. There was plaster, splintered wood and broken pieces of concrete all over the floor. All they did was leave a card on the table. Luckily it only looks really broken from the inside. You can tell there is damage from the outside but not the extent of it so at least nobody passing the door couldn't tell. Before I unlocked it to come inside I thought someone had aimed a few solid kicks to the door but I couldn't tell the lock was busted until I actually pushed it open and could see the frame and the shit on the floor.

I'm going to leave it in the hands of my property manager. He can kick their arses and demand payment if that's what the owner wants. Normally I would be all over it but I have too much on my plate already and I'm only here until tomorrow afternoon and then I have to get back to mum. It seems terribly unprofessional of the police but after my recent dealings with the police force after mum's accident, I can't say I'm the least bit surprised. I've lost total faith in their professionalism.

Weird isn't it! Never again will I say "nothing else could possibly go wrong". I think I jinxed myself ;)

I've chilled out about it now. There's no point in getting all tied up in knots. In the scheme of things this is a minor hiccup that my landlord can deal with. I just wish they'd cleaned up the mess!

It is quite heartening that the neighbours were concerned, especially given that as far as they were concerned, I was missing and then suddenly they could smell decomp. It's kind of comical. You often hear of people who die and aren't found for the longest time. Still, I wish someone would have just contacted my landlord. They have keys!

Thanks for the hugs :)

I'm actually finding it super funny now. It's really a case of, it could only happen to me. No wonder one of my friends nicknamed me Chernobyl the walking disaster so many years ago. Weird crap really does seem to follow me around. No injuries this time though so that's a bonus ;) I told my best friend what happened and after his initial concern and freak out, he fell about laughing. So did I.

Hugs are most welcome. Thank you, hunny!

Well, in the grand scheme of things that's not TOO bad. You are fine, no one else died and all your belongings are where they belong. :)

Still, I imagine it was quite a shock. And totally unnecessary if only they'd tried to get in touch with you. I really hope for an uneventful trip back to your mom's place.

My neighbours are pretty cool for caring. So many people don't give a crap about anyone at all. I'm pretty sure either the building insurance will pay or the owner's corporation will pony up to replace the door and fix the frame. It was just a big relief to know I wasn't robbed.

You really need to write a book about your life and cash in. Everyone will think it's fiction, but we'll know the truth. OMG! The stuff that happens to you!??!
Well I'm glad no one was mouldering in the heat and especially that it wasn't you *g*
I am surprised they didn't fix the freaking door, or the building manager didn't fix it, it's not like this was self inflicted. They do still have locksmiths where you live right?

Date: 2015-02-23 02:38 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
I'm a freak of nature. A disaster magnet! Yes apparently it was crucial that they get inside immediately if I was dead and stinking the place up. If they took the time to get a locksmith or, I dunno, ask the landlord for a key, I might have gone all walking dead on them. I still think some young cop had a hard on for using a battering ram. Probably the first chance he's ever had. Much more exciting to find a dead body after bashing a door in than the anticlimactic opening of locks with keys. It must have been supremely disappointing to find a somewhat messy but otherwise empty apartment. They might have gotten a thrill at seeing my battery operated playmate sitting on the bedside table though ;D

I need to send Sam to talk to the police. If there's a key, then there has to be a lock...or in my case if there's a lock, then there has to be a key. LOL!

((Hugs you back))

Can I just say how happy I am you aren't mouldering in your bed? Sheesh!

I have dealt with a freezer that got unplugged, unnoticed, by accident, and oh, ewww. I understand why your neighbors were worried. But yeah, they should have thought of the guy who would, you know, have a key.

Safe trip back to mum's, and a guick and easy move and settle for you both.

Me too! I have come to the conclusion that my neighbours were well meaning but that the police are a bunch of gung-ho idjits. I have been playing phone tag with the attending constable but hope I can get hold of him later today so he can explain why calling the building management didn't cross his mind.

I hope it's a nice uneventful trip back to mum's :)

I spoke with my next door neighbour whose broken freezer started this whole mess. He pouted because they bashed my door in to see if I was safe but he was gone almost as long as me and nobody broke his door to see if he was ok, lol. I guess they like me more ;) Maybe he had a dead body in his freezer hahahaha.
