Authors Notes: I apologize for the incredibly long delay between chapters. I have been incredibly ill but I'm hoping to resume regular posting. I'm going to try for once a week but because my health is so unpredictable I can't make a scheduled day, I can just do my best. As always, I'm trying to keep the story realistic but I have no experience in real police procedure so it won't be accurate. Sorry this chapter is a bit dry. There was no real way to move the story forward without it as it is an important part, however it's probably the most boring in terms of entertaining reading. The chapter titles are all song names. Chapter 13 - Breath After Breath
Jared leaned his head down onto his best friend’s shoulder and grabbed his hand and squeezed it. He was trembling. “Jensen?”
“Hmm?”
“I want to report the rape.”
" Are you sure?" Jensen's head snapped up, shock clear on his face. "I know I've been wanting you to report this from the start, but there's a huge chance that the cops aren't going to be able to keep a lid on this."
"I know. Once they start investigating, I'm pretty sure it will get out. But I can't keep living like this, and I'm sick of feeling guilty for something that wasn't my fault. God, I really don't want people knowing this happened to me, but I can't risk this happening to someone else. If anything happened to you or Jake, I couldn't live with myself."
"Don't do this for anyone but yourself, Jared. I can take care of myself and Jake's been warned there's a possibility of danger–"
"No, I'm not doing this for you guys...well not entirely, I need to take control back, you know?"
Jared had slumped down into the sofa, and for someone who'd made this decision to assert control, he looked defeated. Jensen slipped his arm around His shoulder, leaning over and placing a kiss on his temple.
"You know I'll be with you the whole way don't you?"
"Yeah I do. Thanks, I honestly don't know if I could do this, or even have gotten through any of this without you."
Jared tilted his head from where it lay on Jensen's shoulder and brushed their lips together. Jensen could feel the slight tremors running through his friend's body and wasn't sure if it was from fear of the impending report to police, or fear of being intimate with another person, another man, and then Jared raised his hand to Jensen's cheek, cupping his jaw and really kissed him.
The following day saw Jared pacing like a caged animal after they had called Mark Pellegrino and told him of Jared's decision. He had said that he would need to talk to his superior and call in the department that dealt with these cases, but he'd promised that he'd put a request in to remain involved in the case. He called back a couple of hours later and told them that he and the other detectives would come to the house to speak to them that afternoon, and that they would also want to speak with Nicki, so Jensen called her immediately after they'd gotten off the phone and she was on her way over.
"Do you want me to call Traci? I'm sure they wouldn't mind if she was here as well."
"What? Oh. Yeah, maybe."
It was obvious that Jared was too distracted to focus, and Jensen was worried he was going to go into full meltdown mode before the police even arrived so he made the decision himself and called her. She said she would be there and to get Jared to take one of the anti-anxiety meds she'd prescribed for him; the lower dose which would be just enough to take the edge of panic off but leave him clear headed enough to deal with the interview.
Both Nicki and Traci arrived within minutes of each other just after Jensen had basically had to force feed lunch into Jared who, despite the medication, was clearly a nervous wreck. They had all sat and had coffee before Traci whisked Jared off to talk to him before the police arrived.
Nikki had been staring at Jensen for the past ten minutes, a quizzical look on her face.
"What?!" He really didn't mean to snap at her but he was almost as tense as Jared.
"Nothing. Sorry, jeez."
"Shit, sorry, Nic. This is just..."
"Yeah, I know. Has something–"
The question was cut short by the phone line from the security gate ringing, announcing the arrival of the detectives. When Ty showed them through to the living room, Jared was practically vibrating out of his own skin.
"Detective Pellegrino." Jensen shook the man's hand.
"Mr Ackles, Mr Padalecki."
The two detectives accompanying him stepped forward; a blonde woman and a medium height man with thinning hair. The woman spoke first, looking directly at Jared.
"I'm Detective Smith and this is my partner Detective Sheppard."
After the introductions were all made, it was Detective Smith who once again took the lead.
"Detective Pellegrino has given us a brief rundown of why we're here, but we need to hear what happened from you, Mr Padalecki. You can give your report to one of us," She gestured to herself and Sheppard. "While the other talks to Mr Ackles and Ms Aycox. I know this is not easy for you so would it make you feel more comfortable talking to a man or a woman? We want you to be as comfortable as you can be, given the circumstances."
"Uh, call me Jared. Um, can I talk with you?"
She smiled gently. "Of course. Maybe Detectives Sheppard and Pellegrino can talk with the others in the kitchen?" She shot a questioning look at Jensen who seemed loathe to leave Jared's side.
"Yeah, sure. Are you going to be okay, Jared? I can stay with you for now and they can talk to me after."
"Actually, it would be better if we talk to you separately," interjected Detective Sheppard. "We absolutely don't want to make this harder on Jared but it would be better if we could take your statements independently."
Traci piped up, "I'll stay with Jared."
The blonde nodded and took a seat opposite Jared. "I know this is hard, Jared, so take your time and tell me everything that you remember, and you can call me Samantha. If it's okay with you I'd like to record your statement so that I don't miss anything for the report."
Taking their statements took just under an hour yet left Jared feeling like he'd run a marathon, completely exhausted and wrung out. The detectives said they would be in touch and Ty saw them out. They left carrying the bag of Jared's clothes Jensen had kept from the night of the attack and a bunch of forms which would allow the detectives access to Jared's medical files.
Nicki and Traci left an hour later after Traci had ensured Jared wasn't going to fall to pieces and Nicki had whipped up some food for the men to eat when dinner time rolled around. Now that the adrenaline had faded, Jared looked pretty much like he was going to fall in a heap.
"You look completely done in, why don't you lie down and try and get a few hours sleep."
"Yeah, I guess. Would you...could you come lie down with me?"
"Sure, come on big guy, let's get you horizontal."
He grabbed the offered hand and tugged him up off the sofa and they walked down the hall to Jared's room. Jensen was lying on his back on top of the covers and Jared had rolled onto his side with his back to him when he felt Jared begin to shake and then the man let out a gut wrenching sob. Jensen immediately scooted over and lay his hand on Jared's shoulder. He wanted to hug him but he knew how Jared felt about someone being behind him and he was mindful of moving too close and wished that Jared would roll over so they were facing each other. He was just about to get up and walk around to the other side of the bed when Jared grabbed his arm and pulled it around him so that Jensen's arm was under Jared's and his hand was resting over his heart. They lay there like that, with Jared being the very large small spoon and Jensen holding him close until he cried himself to sleep.
Back at the precinct, the three detectives met with Smith's and Sheppard's boss, Captain Mitch Pileggi. They walked him through what Jared had told Smith and the information given to Sheppard by Jensen and Nicki.
"So, we have an alleged rape by multiple offenders that happened months ago." He rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Any witnesses or physical evidence?"
"The friend, Ackles, helped the victim bag up his clothes on the night of the attack. We dropped it into Forensics on the way in. We have a signed waiver from Padalecki to obtain his records from the hospital where he was treated the following day, so first port of call will be to pay a visit to the attending physician," Sheppard replied.
"Then we'll hit up the bar where it happened and hope to God someone there saw and remembers something," Smith added. "It would've been a damned sight easier if he'd have reported it straight away."
"Come on, Sam, you know as well as I do that we're lucky he reported it at all, most men don't. Plus he's in the spotlight, it can't have been an easy decision," Sheppard piped up.
"Hey, I'm not blaming the guy, it's just it may be impossible to get a lead after this long unless there's DNA on the clothes and even then, unless their already in the system...It's gonna be tough is all."
"Agreed," the captain nodded. "I want the full statements typed up and on my desk before you leave tonight. Let's hope we get some evidence from the hospital and the clothing. It's good the friend thought to preserve the clothes, I guess those ridiculous CSI type shows are good for something.
"Pellegrino, I spoke with Captain Heyerdahl and he's happy for you to put in some leg work on the case but Sheppard and Smith have the lead on this, are we clear?"
"Yes, Sir. Thank you."
"Keep me apprised. Dismissed."
The detectives headed back to the bullpen and Samantha sat on the edge of her desk. "So, tomorrow, how about I visit the good doctor and you two take the staff at the bar? We can meet back here, see what we've got and decide where to go from there."
"Sounds like a plan," Pellegrino answered.
"Bollocks, this is going to be a nightmare to keep a lid on," Sheppard's sighed. "As soon as we question the staff at the bar about Padalecki being assaulted there's a risk that someone is going to want to make a few bucks by blabbing to the press. Obviously we're not going to mention the nature of the assault but still, he's pretty bloody famous. I'm not sure how much the threat of impeding an investigation is going to work to keep their mouths shut."
"Jared's not stupid, I made it clear when I talked to him, before he decided to make a report, that we can keep a lid on things in the station but he's aware of how people are in this city when it comes to celebrities. I think he knows it's going to get out sooner or later that he was the victim of an attack. We just have to try and make sure those guttersnipes in the press don't find out it was a rape and not a mugging or beating. Mind you, if we do manage to catch and arrest the bastards it's going to come out eventually."
Samantha picked up her notebook and dropped herself heavily into the desk chair. "It might not end up an issue. After all of this time and Padalecki not knowing his assailants, chances are we'll never find the bastards. We've got to hope we get something from Forensics and the hospital or we might be screwed."
"Well I'll let you two get to your paperwork. I'm going to head over and fill my Captain in on where we're at."
Pellegrino was half way out the door when Smith yelled after him, "Hey Mark," Both he and Sheppard turned around. "Bright and early tomorrow, okay?" He gave a little salute.
Sheppard then added, "And sunshine, Sam here likes her coffee black and I'll have Irish Breakfast tea." He grinned when Pellegrino flipped him the bird over his shoulder.
Samantha looked over at him and rolled her eyes. "Great, two Marks. I'm going to have to go back to calling you Sheppard for the duration."
"Just call him Pellegrino, or Mark two. I'm the original and the best, darling." He fluttered his eyelashes facetiously.
"Call me darling again, Mark, and I'll be renaming you asshole for the rest of the investigation."
"Oooh, don't be like that, Sammy, you know you love me." Mark grinned like the Cheshire Cat.
"Just for that, you get to make me a coffee. Asshole." Sam smirked and threw a crumpled up piece of paper which bounced off his head.
"Police brutality. You Yanks are so violent," he cackled.
As he wandered off to make her a cup of the precinct sludge and himself a cup of tea, he couldn't help but hope that the bagged clothes they'd handed in downstairs contained evidence to help them find the men who had brutalized the young actor. It never failed to make him nauseous to see what human beings were capable of doing to one another, and after listening to the recording of Jared recounting his attack, he really wanted to nail these animals.

Date: 2014-04-14 05:54 pm (UTC)There was no way I could have made this chapter exciting and still kept true to the story. Same as there was no way I could just have one paragraph where I mentioned it was reported and then skipped past it because it wouldn't have done the subject any justice. It may be a little boring but it's such a crucial element. As you said, I had to introduce the detectives and give a feel for who they are.
I'm so glad I got Sheppard's voice, I adore him! At least writing English slang and phrasing will be a piece of cake for me, because the Aussie equivalent is incredibly similar.
The new chapter should be up same time next week. Thanks for the lovely comment!!

I'm currently writing for the reverse bang in a completely different genre to anything I've done before in hopes that the writer's block caused by life events can be broken. This story, however, is the one that has my heart, and I'm looking forward to continuing it. I'm writing down snippets and I think in the new year I'll be ready to get going on it again.
