Oh wow, thanks so much for such a thoughtful comment! I did think a lot about the weapons and we do know from canon that Dean was taught to handle guns from an extremely young age. It just seemed to me that John would've made sure Dean was armed whenever the boys were alone and not at school. I picked a really small handgun for two reasons - the ability to hide it easily on a small body and the photo I did the manip with had that weapon. It was originally another boy and I manipulated young Dean's face to fit as the only gun he was pictured with in the show was a shotgun. So I guess the art helped drive the story.
I didn't want to have him kill a human at such a young age - way too traumatic. The police involvement was why the boys ran.
